Native Title Report 2005 : Chapter 3 : The economic logic of the NIC Principles and economic development on Indigenous lands
As my predecessor pointed out in the Native Title Report 2003, native title is a political process as well as a legal process. Indigenous people enter a relationship with the State on the basis of their identity as the traditional owner group of an area of land. Native Title Report 2000: Summary
The reconciliation process has made clear the pressing need for Aboriginal peoples to negotiate freely the terms of their continuing relationship with Australia. The report shows that the recognition of Indigenous people's right to their land and the origins of a nation are inextricably related and that changes to one part of the relationship infer and require changes to the other. Developments… -

Addressing human rights concerns and fostering greater understanding and protection of human rights in Australia
It's great to be here today. I can't think of a better time to be taking stock of developments in human rights law and policy in Australia, or a better place to be doing this than Victoria. As a Sydney-sider I have to admit I haven't always been fully appreciative of the number plates down here, which proclaim: ‘Victoria: The Place to Be!’ But there's no doubt that Victoria is the… -
