Change the course - 18 month milestone
In February 2019, the former Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins, wrote to all 39 Vice-Chancellors to coincide with the 18 month mark since the release of the Change the course report into sexual assault and sexual harassment at Australian universities. Commissioner Jenkins remains keen to keep an open dialogue with universities with respect to their response to the report and implementation of the report’s recommendations, acknowledging that a breadth of work is underway.
The Commissioner specifically requested an update on actions universities had taken in response to Recommendation 1 of the report. Specifically, Recommendation 1 required that Vice-Chancellors appoint an advisory body to guide the implementation of the recommendations made by the Australian Human Rights Commission, and that this advisory group should assess and publicly report on the university’s progress within 18 months.
These reports are in addition to the information provided by universities in the Commission's August 2018 audit (marking 12 months since the release of Change the course), which included updates on all of the report recommendations, and the November 2017 audit.
