Modern Slavery
Modern slavery is when people are forced to work or do things against their will. They can't leave because they are threatened, tricked, or controlled. Here are some examples:
- Human trafficking: Moving people to exploit them.
- Forced labour: Making people work under threats.
- Debt bondage: Making people work to pay off debts unfairly.
- Domestic servitude: Forcing people to work in homes under bad conditions.
- Child labour: Using children for work or services.
Millions of people around the world are affected by modern slavery, often in industries like farming, factories, and household work.
The Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) requires companies in Australia with yearly earnings over $100 million to report every year on the risks of modern slavery in their business and supply chains, and what they are doing to address these risks. Other companies can choose to report if they want to.
In collaboration with partners, the Commission has developed practical, sector-specific resources about Modern Slavery.
